Paul Ching-Bor wählte
für seine Arbeiten das Medium der Wasserfarbe, aber das Ergebnis
ist überaschend. Nichts haben seine Werke mit den üblichen
Charakteristika dieser Technik gemeinsam. Aus der Chinesischen
Tradition kommend wandelt sich dieses Medium unter seinen Händen
zu einer besonders starken, expressionistischen Ausdrucksweise.
Seit Paul Ching-Bor
in New York lebt, ist er fasziniert von den Stahlkonstruktionen
besonders der Brücken, die für ihn aber immer in Zusammenhang
mit der menschlichen Befindlichkeit zu sehen sind. Sie repräsentieren
die Situation des Lebens in New York an sich, die Intensität
der Stadt, die Einsamkeit und die Sehnsüchte der in ihr lebenden
Menschen. Die dunklen Oberflächen und die darauf entstehenden
Strukturen der vertikalen, horizontalen und schräg durch
das Bild stürzenden Konstruktionselemente sind niemals nur
die technische Darstellung einer Brücke oder architektonische
Abbildungen, sondern sie bilden ein Diagramm der Stadt und der
Psyche der in ihr lebenden Menschen.

Das ihm für
die Darstellung seiner Sujets geeignet erscheinende Medium ist
die Wasserfarbe, die er auf 500g schweres Bütten-Papier aufbringt.
Paul Ching-Bor entwickelt seine Bilder nicht, wie es die traditionelle
Wasserfarbenmalerei tut, aus dem Licht, nicht aus der Helligkeit.
Er tränkt das Bild zunächst mit dunklen Farben, den
Schattenbereichen, baut Schicht um Schicht das Bild auf, das zunächst
nur ein Bild, aber noch kein Kunstwerk für ihn darstellt.
Nun beginnt der Künstler zu wischen, zu entfernen, harte
Konturen verlieren sich zunehmend in einer oft nebligen Transzendenz.
Erst jetzt ist das Bild zu einem Kunstwerk geworden.
